Shop for a tire inflator by minutes, not by PSI
Almost every portable tire inflator listing leads with a big pressure number: 120, 150, 160 PSI. A car tire needs about 35. Nearly any inflator can reach that. What differs is how long it takes, how long the unit can run before it must cool down, and whether the cord, hose or battery can finish all four tires. Those numbers are lower on the listing, when they are there at all.
How many minutes will it take?
This is an estimate, not a measurement. My assumptions: the air space is 80% of the simple ring shape your tire size describes. A pump delivers 60% of its stated free-flow airflow at 0 PSI, and loses 0.5 points for each PSI of average tire pressure, never dropping below 10%. Pocket pumps get a further cut to 45% of that. Cold weather, a weak battery, a long hose or a low car battery all make it slower. If the maker gives a real time for a named tire, trust that over this. Always fill to your door-jamb label and never past the tire sidewall maximum.

The four numbers that matter more than max PSI
- Airflow, in L/min or CFM. This sets the minutes. By my estimate, a 35 L/min unit tops up a midsize SUV tire from 28 to 35 PSI in about 1.6 minutes. A 20 L/min pocket pump needs about 6.3.
- Duty cycle or run limit. How many minutes it can run before it needs a rest. It matters most for flats and truck tires.
- Reach or charge. For a corded unit, cord plus hose has to reach the far rear tire. For a cordless one, the battery has to finish the job.
- Gauge accuracy. Auto shut-off is only as good as the gauge behind it. Few listings give a figure.
