Corded 12V or cordless: which tire inflator?

If the inflator will sit in the trunk for emergencies, I'd buy corded. It works whenever the car does, even after a year of neglect. If you will use it monthly, on bikes as well as cars, or away from the car, cordless is nicer. Just be clear about how many tires a charge really covers.

How many tires per charge
Battery claims are only useful when the maker names the tire and the pressures. Two of the picks do. I turned each claim into liters of air per charge, then divided by bigger jobs. This is scaling by air volume alone, so treat it as a rough guide.

So "8 tires per charge" on a small pump is one round of top-ups on an SUV, with nothing left over. And those are best-case numbers. The L7 listing says results vary with tire size, temperature and load. The Airmoto listing says cold weather cuts battery performance and suggests a full charge before every use. Owners of both pocket pumps report batteries that drain fast.
One more thing I noticed. The ETENWOLF listing also claims four F150 tires from 0 to 35 PSI without a break. By my math that is about 607 liters of air, more than the 390 liters its 18-tire claim works out to. Low-pressure air is cheaper to pump, so both can be true. I would still treat 18 as the best case.
How far a corded unit reaches
- AstroAI AIRUN H: the listing gives a 9.84 foot cord plus an extension hose, and says it reaches all tires without moving the unit. On a long truck or with a socket in the dash, check the far rear tire the day it arrives.
- VIAIR 88P: a 10 foot power cord and a 16 foot air hose. It clamps to the car battery and the maker says to run the engine. Owners say it reaches all four tires.
Most 12V socket inflators are made to run with the engine on, so the car battery is not drained. Follow the manual, and never run the engine in a closed garage. The AIRUN H listing names a 15A fuse. If your car's socket is fused lower than the inflator draws, it will blow the fuse. Your owner's manual lists the socket's fuse rating.
Cordless hoses are short
The listings show a 45 cm hose on the ETENWOLF S6 and a 6.1 inch hose on the Airmoto. The unit sits or hangs right at the valve. Turn the wheel so the valve is near the bottom and the pump can rest on the ground.
The in-between options
- DEWALT DCC020IB: runs from a 20V MAX tool battery or from the 12V socket with the cord in the box. If you own the batteries, this covers both cases. The listing is tool only.
